Thank you all for your help.  I solved my own problem.  I realized
that I could reload the page on choosing something from the pull-down,
use $_GET to keep track of the value, and create the object when the
page loads.  I'm not sure why I was resistant to reload the page,
except probably that I hadn't realized it was a viable option.  Thanks
